Road accidents and protests on Chittagong-Cox's Bazar

Overview

A series of fatal road accidents on the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway in Bangladesh has resulted in multiple deaths and public unrest.

In Karnaphuli, a head-on collision occurred near the Shikalbaha Chaumuhani area when a covered van attempting a U-turn struck a microbus. The accident, which involved passengers returning from a wedding, killed four people and left several others injured. While police seized the van, the driver and assistant fled the scene.

In a separate incident in Satkania, a 10-year-old student was killed after being struck by a transport bus. This death triggered protests by local residents and students, who blocked the highway with fires to demand compensation and improved safety infrastructure, such as speed breakers and foot overbridges. Following the blockade, authorities detained the bus driver and initiated the installation of speed breakers near the victim's school.
