Road accidents on Nigerian expressways

Road accidents on major Nigerian expressways have caused significant disruption and loss of life. In late August, a trailer crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near the Simawa axis resulted in severe traffic gridlock, forcing motorists to use residential bypasses or drive against the flow of traffic due to blocked lanes.

By early September, reports indicated multiple fatal incidents across different highways. A multi-vehicle crash on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway involving a trailer, a commercial bus, and a car resulted in five deaths and 18 injuries, with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) citing speeding and wrongful overtaking as potential causes. Additionally, a separate accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near the Long Bridge claimed three lives and injured 10 others, attributed to speed violations and loss of control.

On September 4, further fatal accidents were reported. On the Ife-Ilesa Expressway in Osun State, a head-on collision between a Toyota Hiace bus and a Volkswagen Golf killed three people, including two females and one male, and injured approximately 20 others. The FRSC noted that the victims included three children.

Ongoing reports from the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway near the Ugwu Onyeama axis confirm that the section has seen frequent accidents due to poor road conditions, specifically citing wrongful overtaking and speeding as likely causes in recent multi-vehicle crashes.
