Road safety incidents in Brazil and Paraguay

Entities: Cristian Bittencourt Esmeraldino · Roberto de Jesus Matos · Paraguay · Romaria dos Motociclistas · Santa Catarina

Overview

In early July 2026, police in Paraná, Brazil reported two separate traffic collisions: a fatal hit‑and‑run on Avenida Visconde de Taunay in Ponta Grossa and a minor‑injury crash involving a Chevrolet Tracker on the PR‑082 highway near São João do Ivaí. Both incidents prompted investigations by local authorities.

Later in the month, a wave of fatal motorcycle crashes swept across several Brazilian states and into Paraguay. Between July 18 and 19, Santa Catarina alone saw seven motorcyclists killed in six incidents, while additional deaths occurred on major highways in Minas Gerais, Bahia, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraíba and other locations. The spate involved collisions with police vehicles, other automobiles and stationary objects, prompting involvement from federal highway police and highlighting broader road‑safety concerns in the region.

In the final days of July, the pattern continued. Two friends, Roberto de Jesus Matos and Ricardo Brito Ferreira, were killed when their Honda CG 150 Titan collided head‑on with a Chevrolet D20 truck on the BA‑026 highway. In Formiga, Minas Gerais, a Chevrolet S10 truck struck a motorcyclist after a traffic dispute, causing multiple leg fractures that required surgery. On the same day in Içara, a Suzuki ridden by Cristian Bittencourt Esmeraldino and Maria Eduarda Muraro da Cruz collided with a Yamaha on BR‑101, killing the pair and injuring three other riders traveling to the Romaria dos Motociclistas. Isolated fatal crashes were also reported in Poços de Caldas (collision with a Volkswagen Fox), Gaspar (car‑motorcycle collision) and Maceió (motorcyclist struck by a vehicle driven by an intoxicated woman). These incidents extend the July fatality surge and underscore ongoing road‑safety challenges across Brazil.
