Robert Carradine wrongful death lawsuit against UCLA

Overview

The family of actor Robert Carradine has filed a civil lawsuit against the University of California regents and UCLA Medical Center, alleging that negligence and failure to follow safety protocols at UCLA’s Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital led to his death.

Carradine, known for roles in ‘Revenge of the Nerds’ and ‘Lizzie McGuire’, had voluntarily admitted himself to the locked unit in January 2026 while struggling with bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. The lawsuit claims that hospital staff failed to remove items that could facilitate self-harm, specifically a belt—which is listed as contraband under hospital policy—and a wheeled bedside table.

Additionally, the legal filing asserts that staff neglected to perform required 15-minute safety checks. The family alleges these failures allowed Carradine to attempt suicide, resulting in an anoxic brain injury. Following the incident, Carradine spent five weeks in intensive care before passing away on February 23, 2026. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed the cause of death was an anoxic brain injury resulting from hanging.

The suit, which includes allegations of elder abuse and neglect, seeks general, special, and economic damages. It further contends that the psychiatric care team was reckless and that UCLA records misrepresented the events and contradicted surveillance footage.
