Romania artificial intelligence infrastructure development
Overview
Romania has initiated several projects to strengthen its artificial intelligence and high-performance computing infrastructure. On September 1, the ‘Romanian EuroHPC AI Factory at ICI Bucharest’ (RO AI Factory) project began implementation. Led by the National Institute for Computer Science and Technology (ICI Bucharest) in collaboration with the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest, the initiative aims to provide high-performance computing infrastructure and technical support for AI integration. Following agreements with the European Commission, the investment for equipment is expected to reach tens of millions of euros, with the Romanian state covering personnel and energy costs. Full functionality is anticipated by mid-2025, and an international tender is scheduled for the end of 2026.
The country has also expanded its AI efforts through academic and industrial collaborations. The NEXXT AI Summit is scheduled for October 28–29 in Bucharest, featuring over 50 international leaders and a hackathon focused on developing functional prototypes for business challenges. Additionally, the ASPIRE laboratory (Automation, Simulation, Prediction and Intelligence Research) was launched through a partnership between Renault Group, EVANTAGE Soft, and POLITEHNICA București. Located at the Faculty of Automatic and Computer Science, this 50-seat facility is designed to bridge the gap between university research and industrial application by focusing on AI, automation, simulation, and prediction. Renault Group officials noted that Romania serves as a major competence center for software engineering within their digital activities.
