Romania U21 national team coaching changes

Overview

The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) removed Costin Curelea as the head coach of the Romania U21 national team following the squad’s failure to qualify for the European Championship. Alongside his departure, the FRF sanctioned Curelea and assistant coach Ionuț Stancu with a 25% reduction in their remaining salary payments after an investigation revealed they left the official team program to attend a social event in Spain. The federation noted that while the conduct did not impact sporting activities, it failed to meet professionalism standards.

Following these events, the FRF is considering Adrian Mutu as a potential candidate to lead the U21 team. Technical director Mihai Stoichiță indicated that while no final decision has been made, Mutu remains a possibility. The federation intends to hold discussions with Curelea before finalizing a successor, while focusing on U20 matches to develop the future U21 squad.
