Romanian Environment Ministry political disputes and updates

Romanian Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu reported progress on coastal legality and water infrastructure, noting a decrease in illegal constructions on the coast despite legal challenges from operators seeking to suspend fines. Buzoianu also announced that 297 kilometers of water service works funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) have reached the reception stage.

Following these reports, members of the AUR party accused the Minister of dishonesty. Specifically, MP Valeriu Munteanu criticized legislative delays, while MP Ştefaniţă Avrămescu questioned Ministry spending, citing a communication campaign costing over 19 million lei and other environmental projects as potentially inappropriate expenditures.

In a recent leadership change, Flavia Boghiu, a member of the USR party and former deputy mayor of Brașov, was appointed Secretary of State at the Ministry of Environment, Waters, and Forests. The appointment was proposed by interim Minister Buzoianu and signed by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. Boghiu succeeds Raul Pop.

Boghiu’s appointment follows her acquittal by the Brașov Court of Appeal in a corruption case involving allegations of abuse of office. She noted that she had delayed accepting political roles to protect the ministry’s image until legal proceedings concluded. Minister Buzoianu highlighted Boghiu’s expertise in areas such as flood prevention, pollution management, and water infrastructure.
