Romanian food trade and price regulation
Overview
Romania has reported a narrowing trade deficit in the food and livestock sector. Data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development indicates that during the first seven months of 2026, the deficit decreased by 13.5% to 2.2 billion euros. This shift was driven by an 8.1% increase in exports, particularly in the dairy and egg sector which grew by over 36%, alongside a 1.4% decrease in imports.
In conjunction with these economic trends, the government has extended regulations on commercial markups for essential food products through the end of 2026 under Law no. 105/2026. Rather than fixing retail prices, these limits regulate markups within the supply chain for various staples, including bread, milk, flour, oil, meat, and specific fruits and vegetables.
