Romanian highway construction progress

Entities: Cristian Pistol · Valea Pleșei viaduct · Mapa‑Cengiz · CNAIR · A1 Sibiu‑Pitești highway

Overview

In late July 2026 Romania reported significant advances on two major highway projects. On July 22 the Turkish contractor Makyol was working on the 68‑km A13 Sibiu‑Făgăraș route, with sections 1 and 2 at roughly 17 % and 40 % completion and sections 3 and 4 reaching 44 % and 27 % respectively. The effort involves around 1,570 workers, hundreds of machines, and a contract worth 3.43 billion lei, aiming for full completion by 2028.

A week later, on July 28, construction began on the metal deck of the Valea Pleșei viaduct—the highest structure on the A1 Sibiu‑Pitești highway. The 4,000‑tonne Corten‑steel deck is being positioned about 50 metres high using hydraulic jacks, as conventional cranes cannot operate at that height. The work, led by the Turkish consortium Mapa‑Cengiz on the 31.33‑km Boița‑Cornetu section, involves 627 workers, 156 pieces of equipment, and a contract of 4.25 billion lei, though only about 45 % of the works can proceed pending updated permits.
