Romanian police probe medical corruption

In late July 2026 Romanian authorities expanded a series of investigations targeting misconduct within the health sector. On 24 July, police seized more than 200,000 lei worth of orthopedic implants and related supplies from a hospital in Piatra Neamț after a hygiene inspection uncovered bags stored by orthopaedic doctors. The seizure prompted an embezzlement case and linked the doctors to a separate bribery probe.

Five days later, on 29 July, the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police carried out coordinated raids in Bucharest and Ilfov. The operation targeted lawyers, medical personnel and a police officer alleged to have illegally obtained personal and medical data on road‑accident victims. The information was reportedly funneled to a civil‑law firm that offered litigation services for compensation, charging large success fees. Prosecutors described the scheme as a network profiting from victim data, issuing summons to 15 individuals while the DIICOT investigation continues.

Together, the incidents illustrate a broader crackdown on corruption and illicit practices intersecting the medical, legal and law‑enforcement arenas in Romania.
