Romanian political dispute between PSD and USR

Overview

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) has launched a series of accusations against the Save Romania Union (USR) regarding political integrity and transparency.

Initially, PSD accused USR of hypocrisy for criticizing Deputy Prime Minister Marian Neacșu over a 2016 conflict of interest conviction. PSD argued that Neacșu has undergone legal rehabilitation and that USR previously voted for his appointment. The PSD also targeted USR leader Dominic Fritz, citing a High Court decision regarding an administrative conflict of interest to suggest USR fails to apply its own standards to its members.

Subsequently, PSD expanded its criticism to USR’s management of state-owned companies. The party alleged that USR appointed 32 individuals to 38 board positions within companies under the Ministry of Economy. PSD claimed these appointees include former parliamentarians and party members, with a combined monthly remuneration of approximately 276,000 lei. Specific individuals named in these allegations include Nicu Fălcoi, Adriana Miron, Ion Daniel Popescu, and Aurora-Speranța Munteanu.
