Romanian public official integrity investigations

Overview

The National Integrity Agency (ANI) has expanded its investigation into Romanian public officials holding positions in violation of integrity laws. Under Law no. 180/2026, the agency identified 67 individuals occupying 71 functions subject to mandatory termination. This group includes 11 mayors, 21 local councilors, 10 deputy mayors or administrators, and 24 officials in management or executive roles. The increase in identified officials from 55 in August is attributed to discoveries regarding missing wealth declarations and officials continuing to hold office after claiming to have ended professional activities. Among those affected is Timișoara Mayor Dominic Fritz regarding a conflict of interest.

Following these findings, several local officials are facing mandate terminations or political resignations. In Neamț County, Crăcăoani Mayor Alexandrina Raclariu faces mandate termination due to a conflict of interest involving the employment of her son, alongside criminal investigations for complicity in the diversion of public tenders. Other officials, including Grigore Agapie and Nicolae Pricope, are also facing termination under the provisions of the Fritz Law. In Satu Mare County, Socond Mayor Nicolae Cornea Mare resigned from all political positions within the National Liberal Party (PNL) following the imposition of judicial control.
