Rome school stabbing and radicalization investigation

Overview

A 13-year-old student stabbed 66-year-old history teacher Isabella Marsilio at the Giovanni Verga middle school in Centocelle, Rome. The attack, which involved the use of pepper spray and a serrated diving knife, was allegedly premeditated. The student reportedly used a TikTok countdown and a helmet-mounted GoPro camera to film the incident for a Telegram group. During the assault, the teacher was stabbed three times in the left armpit area. A classmate intervened to stop the attack by pinning the aggressor down. Following treatment at Vannini Hospital, Marsilio has expressed forgiveness for the student and intends to return to teaching.

While initial reports suggested the motive was resentment over academic debts, subsequent investigations by the Carabinieri focused on the teenager’s radicalization. Digital forensics indicated the minor had consumed extremist propaganda online, including content related to international terrorists such as Anders Behring Breivik and Brenton Harrison Tarrant. Investigators are examining how the student was recruited through social media and gaming platforms, noting that the attack was livestreamed to approximately 22 people via Telegram.

Authorities are further investigating whether the minor was influenced by the ‘True Crime Community’ (TCC) or white supremacist and accelerationist groups. Investigators noted ideological indicators, such as the student wearing a shirt featuring the acronym ‘Tmd’ (Total Muslim Death). Police are also analyzing the use of credit cards to purchase the diving knives and softair goggles used in the assault, and are conducting forensic analysis on the digital devices of both the student and his mother to identify potential instigators.
