Overview
Rosatom is advancing its Arctic operations through both scientific expeditions and nuclear infrastructure development.
The company recently concluded its 7th annual ‘Knowledge Icebreaker’ international science and education expedition. Utilizing the ‘50 Let Pobedy’ nuclear icebreaker, the 10-day journey traveled from Murmansk to the North Pole and Franz Josef Land. The program involved international high school students in scientific experiments, including the testing of a recoverable stratosphere platform and the launch of a radiosonde to evaluate communications along the Northern Sea Route.
In tandem with these expeditions, Rosatom is expanding its technical capacity for Arctic navigation. CEO Alexey Likhachev reported the completion of 15 RITM-200 next-generation pressurized water reactors. Two of these units have been installed on the nuclear-powered icebreaker ‘Leningrad’ to facilitate navigation through thick ice, while the remaining 13 units are being prepared to support the icebreaker fleet and remote regional energy projects.
