Russia-Saudi diplomatic and security engagements

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has engaged in high-level diplomacy focusing on bilateral relations with Saudi Arabia and broader regional security. During meetings in Moscow with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, discussions centered on OPEC+ cooperation, trade growth, and the conflict in Ukraine. Lavrov emphasized that any settlement in Ukraine must address what he termed the “root causes of the crisis,” which he attributed to Western actions by the EU and NATO.

Lavrov also addressed Middle Eastern stability, expressing concern regarding potential military conflicts involving the US, Israel, and Iran. He subsequently voiced support for the Mecca Agreement—a defense alliance between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan—suggesting it could form the basis for a collective security system in the Persian Gulf. He proposed expanding this alliance to include nations such as Iran, Egypt, and Algeria.

Regarding European security, Lavrov warned that “a European provocation could trigger a conflict with Russia,” drawing historical parallels to past catalysts for war. He specifically criticized German leadership for its policies in Ukraine.
