Russia-Ukraine civilian strike escalation
Entities: Kherson · Poltava · Nova Poshta · Kharkiv · Russian Armed Forces
Overview
The civilian toll of the war continued to rise in late July 2026. On 22 July, Russian shelling in the Nikopol district of Dnipropetrovsk wounded seven people and damaged homes, a college and vehicle depots, while attacks on 23 localities across the Sumy region injured seven civilians, including two children, and destroyed residential buildings, cars and other infrastructure.
Two days later, on 25 July, a Ukrainian night‑time strike on the village of Kirylivka in the Russian‑occupied Zaporizhzhia region hit facilities used as tourist camps, killing eight civilians – two of them children – and wounding six more. The Russian‑appointed governor condemned the attack as a “grave crime” against non‑combatants. In the same night, a Russian strike on a postal building in Sumy killed three people and wounded two.
On 31 July, Russian forces carried out coordinated attacks on several Ukrainian cities. In Poltava a strike destroyed the sorting terminal of the private postal operator Nova Poshta; staff were evacuated without injuries. Drone assaults in the Sumy region injured three civilians, including a motorcyclist and a family in a car, both in critical condition. In Kharkiv a drone hit a civilian gas station, igniting a large fire that required an emergency response. Near Kherson, a teenager was seriously wounded by an unexploded device left by Russian forces, prompting authorities to warn residents against handling unknown metal objects. These incidents reinforce the widening pattern of strikes that, irrespective of the side launching them, increasingly affect civilian populations in both contested and occupied territories, deepening the humanitarian impact of the conflict.
