Russia-Ukraine conflict in Donbas
Overview
Russia has signaled its intent to continue military operations in Ukraine until it achieves full control over the Donbas region. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow is prepared to fight with full force to secure its interests, including even the smallest fractions of disputed territory. During this period, Russian military efforts have utilized continuous drone and missile strikes targeting civilian infrastructure and residential areas across several Ukrainian cities.
By mid-October, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the capture of the strategic town of Dobropolye in the Donetsk region, describing it as a significant breakthrough that opens a direct route toward the borders of the Donetsk People's Republic. During a meeting with military commanders, including Chief of the General Staff Valeriy Gerasimov, Putin reported that since September 1, Russian forces had seized over 1,800 square kilometers of territory and 92 localities.
Expanding on these gains, Putin reported that since the beginning of 2026, Russian forces have seized approximately 6,500 square kilometers of territory and 310 settlements. Putin further stated that the Lugansk People's Republic is under full Russian control, while noting that Ukraine maintains control over approximately 10% of Donetsk and 16.5% of Zaporizhzhia. He emphasized the establishment of a security zone along the border with Ukraine, declaring this measure will not be subject to future peace negotiations.
In response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, Putin ordered continued massive, coordinated attacks against Ukrainian military-industrial complexes and logistics centers. These strikes have impacted energy supplies for hundreds of thousands of people in regions such as Kyiv and Kharkiv.
