Overview

In late July 2026 Russian forces expanded their campaign against Ukrainian infrastructure. On 30 July, precision strikes hit Odesa‑region port facilities, damaging a fuel‑station, a distribution point and four dry‑cargo ships, two of which were at sea. The attack killed an Indian citizen aboard the merchant vessel Omorfi and was accompanied by a massive night‑time strike that used air, land and sea weapons and drones against military‑industrial, telecom and logistics sites in Kyiv, Lviv and other regions, killing eight civilians, including three children. Russian officials described a new underground fuel‑depot system built up to five metres deep to protect supplies from Ukrainian drones. Ukraine reported sinking the Russian cargo ship Yanina and said Russian strikes also reached three oil refineries in Bashkortostan and radar stations in Krasnodar Krai, showing the conflict’s widening geographic scope.

The fuel‑station campaign continued into early August. Ukrainian authorities confirmed more than 200 stations had been hit since June 2024, with intense clusters in front‑line areas such as Zaporizhzhia, where 54 attacks over 24 days killed four people and injured 29, including police officer Mykhailo Tsypliakov. The United Nations noted June 2026 as the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since 2022, and Western officials warned that Russia’s record use of ballistic missiles could further escalate the war.

On the same day, Ukrainian drones sank the 100,000‑tonne Russian‑flagged container ship Janina in the Black Sea/Azov Sea, with all 17 crew members surviving. The drone campaign also struck three major oil refineries in Russia’s Bashkortostan region and damaged four radar stations in Krasnodar Krai, underscoring the expanding maritime and energy‑targeted operations.
