Russian Citadel anti-aircraft system development
Overview
Russia has introduced the Citadel, a new anti-aircraft missile system designed to intercept cruise missiles, strike drones, and heavy unmanned aerial vehicles. The system can function as a standalone unit or within a multi-layered air defense network. It features automated target recognition and trajectory calculation, with the ability to self-correct its aim if an initial projectile misses.
Following the initial unveiling, the state corporation Rostec developed a mobile configuration of the Citadel, also known as the ZAK-30. This version integrates the combat module, radar, and optical detection systems onto a vehicle chassis to enable faster relocation. The mobile system utilizes 30mm automatic guns and specialized shrapnel-filled projectiles with remotely controlled fuses to engage maneuverable drones and missiles by creating a cloud of fragments. Rostec claims the system is more ammunition-efficient than standard weapons, though the company has not released independently verified performance data.
