Russian diplomatic tensions with Japan and Ukraine

Russian officials have intensified their criticism of Japan and addressed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine through various diplomatic channels.

Initially, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused Japan of being on a ‘dangerous path’ and failing to accept the historical outcomes of World War II. Regarding Ukraine, Zakharova raised concerns about nuclear safety at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant due to military attacks and characterized the European Union’s plan to use interest from frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine as ‘participation in terrorist attacks.’

By the 11th Eastern Economic Forum, the rhetoric expanded to include territorial disputes and military deployments. Zakharova asserted that Russian sovereignty over the Kuril Islands is ‘indisputable’ and warned of measures regarding the deployment of American-made Typhon missile systems near Russian borders. President Vladimir Putin stated that a resolution to the Ukraine crisis must be reached directly between Russia and Ukraine, adding that he is open to restoring full-format relations with the United States once a settlement is achieved.
