Escalating UAV campaign across Ukraine and Russia

Overview

In late June and July 2026, Russia intensified drone attacks on Ukrainian energy and logistics facilities, prompting Kyiv to launch a reciprocal long‑range UAV offensive. On 25 July 2026 Ukrainian forces carried out a massive strike deep inside Russia, hitting the Lukoil Filanovsky offshore oil platform in the Caspian Sea, an oil refinery in Tyumen, a weapons‑component plant in Kirov, a logistics centre in Yekaterinburg, and a fuel depot and air‑defence systems in Rostov‑on‑Don. The campaign also targeted the Russian‑owned e‑commerce operator Wildberries, with warehouses struck in Moscow, St Petersburg, Crimea and Ekaterinburg, and damaged two sanctioned cargo vessels, Port Olya 2 and Begey. Russian air‑defence intercepted many drones—127 reported—and downed a Kh‑59/69 missile, but some attacks succeeded, causing two civilian deaths in the Belgorod region and damage to the selected infrastructure. Ukrainian officials described the operation as retaliation for recent Russian UAV raids on Ukrainian civilian sites and as an effort to cripple Russia’s war‑economy and its ability to move military supplies.
