Russian military activity in Libya

Overview

Satellite imagery from the firm Vantor indicates that approximately 3,000 tons of Russian military equipment were unloaded at the port of Tobruk in northeastern Libya during mid-September. These supplies are reportedly destined for the Haftar clan, which maintains control over the eastern and southern regions of the country, including vital oil and gas fields.

In conjunction with these deliveries, reports suggest that Moscow is recruiting drone operators for the African Corps, a mercenary formation intended to succeed the Wagner Group. Recruitment efforts on Telegram have targeted Russian citizens under the age of 45 to operate assault drones, such as Geran models.

The proximity of Tobruk to the European Union and NATO southern flank, located less than 400 kilometers from Greece and 1,000 kilometers from Italy, has raised security concerns. Analysts note that the range and speed of the Geran drones could potentially threaten targets near the European coast.
