Safety and labor controversies at Paros beach bar
Entities: Viva Punda · Pounta · EKAV · Paros · Syros Prosecutor's Court
Overview
A viral video from a beach bar on the Greek island of Paros initially drew national attention and debate regarding labor rights and working conditions. The video showed a waiter walking through the sea to serve tourists on floating platforms, an act the bar owner described as a joke among staff.
Following this controversy, a 4-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool at the same establishment, Viva Punda, on Saturday, August 8. The child was discovered unconscious in the pool by two young women, prompting immediate rescue attempts by a bartender and emergency medical services (EKAS). Despite intensive resuscitation efforts at the scene and the Paros Health Center, the child could not be revived.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the drowning, focusing on how the child entered the pool unnoticed while his parents were in the sea. The 59-year-old owner of the establishment, who is officially registered as the lifeguard, has been arrested and remains in custody facing charges of manslaughter by negligence to appear before the Syros Prosecutor. The child's parents were also initially arrested on charges of manslaughter by negligence but have since been released by order of the prosecutor.
Investigators are currently reviewing security footage and witness testimonies to determine if mandatory safety measures, proper lifeguard supervision, and valid pool permits were in place at the time of the incident. The beach bar remains closed as a mark of mourning.
