SAIC Motor electric vehicle plant in Spain

Overview

SAIC Motor has announced plans to establish its first European manufacturing facility in Ferrol, Galicia, to produce the MG2 electric B-segment city car. The project involves an investment estimated between 196.94 million and 200 million euros.

To mitigate high EU tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, the company intends to use the CKD (completely knocked down) method, importing components from China for assembly in Spain. Production is slated to begin in 2028 with a projected medium-term capacity of up to 120,000 vehicles annually. The initiative is expected to create approximately 2,300 jobs across production and logistics.

As of late 2026, the project is nearing final authorization from the Spanish Council of Ministers regarding the foreign direct investment.
