Nationwide, the celebration is marked by the tradition of the ‘fanouropita’, a sweet fasting cake made with an odd number of ingredients, typically seven or nine. Devotees often prepare this Lenten, orange-flavored cake to seek the saint’s help in ‘revealing’ lost objects or resolving difficult life situations, a connection drawn from his name and the Greek verb ‘phaino’, meaning to reveal. In some regions, the custom is also linked to a prayer for the forgiveness of the Saint’s mother. In areas such as Lamia, Argolida, Aetolia-Acarnania, Evia, and Lefkada, religious services and the blessing of these cakes serve as key communal activities. Pilgrims frequently bring these cakes to churches to be blessed by priests before sharing them with the community.

The prominence of Saint Fanourios is linked to the 14th-century discovery of an icon in Rhodes near the city’s old walls. During excavations of an ancient temple, an icon depicting the saint as a young soldier undergoing twelve martyrdoms was found.

Recent celebrations included Vespers services led by various Metropolises. In the Metropolis of Piraeus, Metropolitan Serafeim led services in Drapetsona, noting the icon's discovery in 1335 following a Saracen raid. In the Metropolis of Aetolia and Acarnania, Metropolitan Damaskinos presided over Panegyric Vespers in Stamna, Messolonghi, where the community participated in the blessing of traditional ‘fanouropites’.
