Salto mental health service expansion and planning

Overview

The government of Salto has taken steps to expand and formalize its mental health services. Initially, the ‘Espacio de Escucha’ (Listening Space) initiative, which was originally designed for municipal workers, was expanded to the general public. This service provides psychological orientation and professional guidance to help citizens navigate mental health resources through pre-scheduled appointments with licensed psychologists.

Building on these services, the department is now developing a Departmental Mental Health Plan for the 2027-2029 period. Coordinated by psychologist Valeria Peiró, the plan focuses on prevention, community support, youth participation, and rural outreach. The strategy aims to address the underlying causes of mental distress, reduce social stigma, and combat isolation within a human rights framework.
