Samsung and Google cloud synchronization updates

Samsung is transitioning its mobile gallery synchronization service from Microsoft OneDrive to Google Photos. The integration with OneDrive is scheduled to end on September 30, 2026. A new feature called ‘Gallery Cloud Sync’ will allow compatible Samsung Galaxy users on Android 13 or later to synchronize photos and videos directly from the Samsung Gallery app to Google accounts.

Technical distinctions exist between this new method and traditional Google Photos backups, as certain features like specific memories or live albums may be unavailable for content synced via the Samsung Gallery. While existing content in OneDrive remains accessible through Microsoft, the direct synchronization link with Samsung Gallery will be removed.

Concurrently, Google is developing new features for its Google One subscription service, including a ‘Connected Accounts’ function. This would allow primary plan managers to extend storage benefits and specific AI features to secondary personal accounts without requiring them to join a formal Family Group, while maintaining individual data privacy. Google has also provided guidance on managing Google Photos storage to prevent accidental deletion of photos from linked devices when clearing cloud space.
