Samsung Quantum Dot TV production reduction
Overview
Samsung is planning a significant reduction in the production of its Quantum Dot (QLED) televisions. Reports from the South Korean outlet Electronic Times indicate that production is expected to drop from approximately 10 million units last year to between 2 and 3 million units this year, representing a decline of 70 to 80 percent.
This strategic shift is driven by intense price competition from Chinese manufacturers, specifically TCL and Hisense, which offer similar technologies at more competitive price points. To address this, Samsung is reportedly moving away from lower-priced QD models to focus on higher-margin technologies, such as Mini LED and OLED, where the company can better justify premium pricing.
As part of this transition, Samsung has already removed its standard QLED line, which utilized LCD panels with LED backlighting and a quantum dot layer, replacing them with Mini LED models. The reduction is also expected to impact the more expensive Neo QLED series, with production potentially being halved by next year and a complete phase-out possible by 2028.
