Samsung smartphone update policy
Overview
Samsung’s software update policy continues to show a widening gap between older models and newer flagships. By July 2026, software support officially ended for several 2021 Galaxy models, including the A52s 5G, A03s, M32 5G, and F42 5G. While these devices remain functional for most everyday applications, the expiration of their four-year security-patch window increases the risk of vulnerability exploitation.
This transition occurs alongside the implementation of the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, which requires a minimum of five years of updates for new smartphones starting in June 2025. However, the regulation does not apply retroactively to older hardware.
In contrast, Samsung’s long-term support policy for newer devices remains in effect. The Galaxy S24, launched in 2024, is pledged to receive seven years of operating-system upgrades and security patches, extending its lifecycle until at least 2030.
As of August 2026, additional older models are approaching the end of their support cycles, including the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3, and various devices in the S22 and A53 series. As these models reach their limits, users will lose access to major One UI releases, Android upgrades, and monthly security patches, potentially impacting long-term device safety and software compatibility.
