San Bernardino jacuzzi assault and robbery

Overview

On August 14, Greg Medina, a 48-year-old chef for Lutheran Social Services, was subjected to an unprovoked assault and robbery while in a jacuzzi at the Creekside Village apartments in San Bernardino, California. Surveillance footage showed one suspect kicking Medina in the back of the head while a second suspect stole his iPhone to prevent him from calling the police. The victim reported losing his AirPods and breaking his glasses, noting the attack could have led to him drowning or losing consciousness.

Following the investigation, two 13-year-old boys were arrested for the attack, which was identified as a ‘TikTok stunt’. The assault resulted in Medina suffering a concussion and post-concussion syndrome, causing ongoing dizziness and headaches. Medina also reported financial strain due to lost property and missed work during his recovery.

The case progressed after one of the suspects’ fathers contacted Medina via Facebook to admit his son’s involvement and turned the boy over to the authorities. Medina noted that the suspects and their families were respectful when offering apologies at the jail, and he stated that he has forgiven the boys.
