San Marino disability sports support initiatives

Overview

San Marino has taken steps to increase support for athletes with disabilities through new financial and legislative initiatives.

In August 2026, the State Secretariat for Sport signed a three-year agreement with the Sammarinese Special Sports Federation (Fsss). This convention provides an annual commitment of 60,000 euros to support technical staff training, facility accessibility, and equipment acquisition. The initiative is expected to be bolstered by a new Sports Law that would formally recognize the right to sport for people with disabilities and allow the San Marino Olympic Committee to function as a National Paralympic Committee.

Following this, the organization Attiva-Mente proposed an Istanza d’Arengo to establish a permanent public fund specifically for adaptive sports equipment. This proposed fund would cover the costs of purchasing and maintaining specialized gear, such as sports wheelchairs and prosthetics, for competitive, recreational, and school-based activities. The proposal emphasizes the principle of “nothing about us without us,” advocating for the direct involvement of people with disabilities in defining the fund’s regulations.
