San Marino healthcare policy debates

During the 53rd Festa dell’Amicizia organized by the Sammarinese Christian Democratic Party (PDCS), political and labor leaders held debates regarding the future of San Marino’s healthcare system.

Secretary of State for Health Massimo Andrea Ugolini advocated for defending the universal healthcare model, suggesting that rising costs due to an aging population should be treated as a community investment. He proposed exploring new opportunities such as an International Pharmacy and increased exchanges with Italian regions. Ugolini also suggested a dual strategy of improving current hospital services while planning for a new structure.

Milena Frulli, Secretary General of the Confederazione Democratica Lavoratori Sammarinese (CDLS), supported this dual approach. She emphasized that any new facility must be rooted in universality and free access. Frulli advocated for a focus on territorial services and elderly care, specifically suggesting that medical assistance should be provided in patients' homes whenever possible. She identified three pillars for the system: appropriateness in resource use, prevention, and territoriality to bring care closer to citizens.
