San Siro stadium centenary and redevelopment debate

The San Siro stadium in Milan is celebrating its centenary, marking 100 years since its inauguration on September 19, 1926. Originally designed by AC Milan president Piero Pirelli as an English-style venue without an athletics track, the stadium has grown from a 35,000-capacity facility to a landmark accommodating over 75,000 spectators. Its inaugural match was a derby between Inter and Milan that ended 6-3.

Beyond its sporting significance for AC Milan and Inter Milan, the venue holds a major cultural and economic legacy. It has hosted 214 concerts since 1965, featuring artists such as Bob Marley, Bruce Springsteen, and Michael Jackson. Economically, the stadium is a critical asset; for the 2024/2025 season, combined matchday revenues for Inter and AC Milan were estimated between 150 million and 170 million euros.

As the stadium reaches this milestone, its future is the subject of intense debate. Current redevelopment plans involve the demolition of much of the historic Giuseppe Meazza structure to make way for a new, modern stadium, potentially located in the Tesio area. This project, estimated to cost approximately 2.149 billion euros, aims to create a multifunctional urban district including offices, commercial spaces, and green areas. The prospect of demolition has sparked tension among fans and former players; for instance, former player Aldo Serena has advocated for a renovation model similar to the Santiago Bernabéu rather than total replacement.
