Sancti Spíritus mammography service restoration

Overview

The Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial Hospital in Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, has begun the process of restoring mammography services following a hiatus of more than two years. The previous equipment became inoperable due to technical failures and a lack of replacement parts, forcing local patients to travel to Villa Clara for exams.

A new MAMMOMAT 3000 Nova machine has been provided through a donation managed by the association CubaSí and German collaborators. While the equipment is currently on-site, the installation and setup of image processing systems are expected to take approximately 30 days.

Once operational, the hospital intends to prioritize first-time patients, those requiring pre-surgical evaluation, and individuals undergoing oncological treatment. The service will also be available to male patients, following the diagnosis of three cases of male breast cancer in the province during 2026.
