Santa Clara del Cobre gang violence
Entities: Gerardo · Rodrigo · Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) · Mexican Army · Guardia Nacional
Overview
In late July 2026, a gunfight erupted in Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacán, when two rival criminal groups exchanged fire. Security forces, including the Guard and the Mexican Army, were deployed to the nearby El Chicharrón area. Although hundreds of shots were fired and several vehicles were hit, no deaths or arrests were reported, and authorities seized three armed vehicles, one with improvised armor.
A few weeks later, in early August, two men were found dead in a Jeep riddled with AK‑47 ammunition on the same town’s main road. Local residents blocked forensic investigators, forcing the army, Guardia Nacional and municipal police to withdraw. The incidents illustrate a continuing pattern of armed criminal activity and community resistance to official investigations in Santa Clara del Cobre.
