Santiago Metro Line 5 fire

Overview

On July 27, 2026, a fire broke out in a train carriage at the Santa Isabel station on Santiago Metro’s Line 5. The fire completely destroyed one carriage and caused minor damage to two adjacent cars, producing smoke from burning plastic and rubber components.

The incident led to the closure of six stations: Santa Isabel, Plaza de Armas, Bellas Artes, Baquedano, Parque Bustamante, and Irarrázaval. Service was restricted to the stretch between Plaza de Maipú and Vicente Valdés. Approximately 200 firefighters and 30 vehicles responded to the scene. While extensive ventilation was required to clear the smoke, no injuries were reported and no structural damage to the station or ticket offices occurred.
