Sarah Sjöström maternity comeback

Swedish Olympic champion Sarah Sjöström entered the 2026 European Swimming Championships in Paris as a new mother, targeting her first continental titles in the 50m freestyle and butterfly. Upon her arrival in Paris, she noted that her return to major championship competition had occurred “much faster than I could have imagined.”

Sjöström expressed excitement about sharing the experience with her family, including her one-year-old son, Adrian, who traveled to Paris for the event. While acknowledging she might need several races to regain her competitive rhythm, she remained a frontrunner in the 50-meter butterfly and 50-meter freestyle. Leading the European rankings in both distances following strong performances in June 2026, the 32-year-old discussed her evolving perspective on sport and motherhood in interviews with L'Equipe and SVT.

Her comeback reached a historic milestone on August 11, when she secured the gold medal in the 50-meter butterfly. By clocking a time of 25.05 seconds, Sjöström earned her 18th European title, equaling the record held by German swimming icon Franziska van Almsick. This victory marked her return to the top of the podium for the first time since winning her first European title at age 14. The podium was completed by fellow Swede Sara Junevik, who took the bronze medal with a time of 25.51 seconds.

In the days following her debut, she posted fast times that placed her among Europe’s best, and she shifted her focus to achieving a career milestone – her 100th international medal – while also keeping an eye on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. By early August, she was reporting personal bests (23.86 s in Rome) and positioning herself as the third-fastest swimmer of the season, underscoring a successful return to elite competition.
