Sarawak community leadership restructuring and welfare roles
Overview
In the Betong Division, proposals have been made to restructure and expand the roles of Community Leaders and Village Chiefs (KMKK) to address demographic changes and improve government service delivery. These leaders manage various responsibilities, including disaster management, infrastructure development, and communicating government policies.
To support these roles, the Sarawak Government increased monthly allowances for KMKK members starting January 1, 2024.
Broadening the scope to the state level, officials have highlighted the KMKK as a vital link for local governance and welfare. Beyond administrative tasks and verifying documents, these leaders play a critical role in identifying vulnerable populations to ensure they receive government aid, such as the Sarawak Basic Needs Contribution Scheme (SKAS).
