Sarawak economic development and 2030 goals

The Sarawak government is pursuing a strategy to transform the region into a high-income, developed state by 2030 through the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).

To achieve these economic goals, officials have emphasized the necessity of investing in human capital. Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Dato Sri Dr Roland Sagah Wee Inn identified education as a “strategic investment in human capital” required to navigate technological advancement. Support for this includes initiatives such as the PETRONAS Education Sponsorship – Memperkasakan Ilmu Sarawak.

During 2026 Malaysia Day celebrations, Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Abeng Openg expressed confidence in reaching high-income status, citing national stability and collaboration with the Federal Government. He noted that Sarawak intends to contribute to national strength via green energy, industry, and technology. Complementing this, Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar urged citizens to prioritize innovation and high educational standards to foster prosperity and new job opportunities.
