Sardinian ports development initiatives

In late June, the regional party Riformatori Sardi highlighted the stagnation of the Alghero port, describing it as a "parking lot for boats" and condemning the absence of a concrete development plan. The party blamed local authorities and the port consortium for missing opportunities to create a modern marina that could boost tourism, jobs and services. In the same period, the city of Trapani repurposed a former Guardia di Finanza building into the "Centro per la Cultura del Mare – Trapani for Peace," linking the project to waterfront regeneration and UNESCO biosphere candidacy.

By late July, attention shifted to a broader strategic push for Trapani. Business leader Gaspare Panfalone called for a national summit in the autumn to formulate a shared roadmap for turning the port into a leading Mediterranean logistics and cruise hub. The proposal called for completing infrastructure upgrades—new berths, deeper basins and higher draught—to accommodate larger commercial vessels, cruise ships and offshore wind‑energy supply chains. Recent port data showing significant cargo and ro‑ro traffic growth was cited as evidence of the port’s dynamism and its potential economic impact for Sicily and Italy.
