Sareb-related housing evictions in Spain

Overview

Tensions have risen regarding the eviction of vulnerable families from properties managed by the Spanish asset management company Sareb.

In Narón, A Coruña, Néstor Rego of the Bloque Nacionalista Galego (BNG) called for government intervention to halt an upcoming eviction. Rego criticized the administration for acting like a ‘speculative real estate company or a vulture fund’ and urged that Sareb’s large inventory of habitable properties be redirected toward public social housing.

In La Riera de Gaià, Sareb has initiated the eviction of approximately 20 families. These residents had previously rented from a developer that went bankrupt, resulting in the properties being transferred to a bank and then to Sareb. While five families secured affordable rental contracts, Sareb has refused to renew leases for fifteen others, citing failure to meet required criteria. A court resolution has already scheduled the eviction of three houses, affecting several households with small children.
