Saskatchewan agricultural and crop conditions

Overview

In late July, a Saskatchewan crop report indicated that hot and humid weather accelerated crop development in the wetter northern and eastern regions, with canola and pulse crops generally in good condition. However, this heat also reduced soil moisture, causing stress in drier southern and western areas. Specialist Tyce Masich noted emerging pest pressure from bertha armyworms during this period.

By mid-August, harvest completion was estimated at approximately two per cent, a rate slightly ahead of the previous year but below five-year and ten-year averages. While early-seeded crops were nearing maturity due to warm, dry conditions, cooler temperatures had recently slowed operations. Much of the province remained dry, with significant portions of cropland, hayland, and pasture rated as having short or very short moisture levels.

Recent developments show a shift in weather patterns, with Environment Canada issuing rainfall warnings for southeast Saskatchewan, including Carlyle, Estevan, and Moosomin, predicting 50-70 millimetres of rain. Local farmers report that while rainfall has fluctuated between heavy downpours and light drizzle, there is currently no standing water in the fields. Some producers noted the moisture is beneficial following July’s high temperatures that caused ground cracking. While cereal crops are reported to be in good condition, some canola crops remain patchy due to previous flooding from heavy rains in June.
