School axe attack in Kolno, Poland

Overview

An 11-year-old boy attacked a 10-year-old girl with an axe at a primary school in Ptaki, near Kolno. Initial reports suggested the victim may have been an accidental target as she was passing a restroom when the boy emerged with the weapon.

As the situation developed, the extent of the victim's injuries was clarified. The girl, identified as Nikola, sustained serious wounds including a broken thumb, deep wounds on her back, and two head wounds, one of which involved a skull fracture. While she has been discharged from the hospital to recover at home, her parents reported that she is struggling with mental health, including feelings of self-blame and social isolation.

The attacker was hospitalized in Białystok. Because the assailant is under the age of 13, he will not face criminal responsibility under Polish law. Instead, the case is being managed by a family court, which may involve placement in a specialized facility.
