School supply support initiatives in Rethymno
Overview
In late August 2026, the Rethymno Municipality launched a school supply drive to assist economically disadvantaged families. Managed by the Social Services Directorate, the initiative encouraged citizens to donate items such as bags, notebooks, and stationery through ‘Solidarity Baskets’ located at the Community Center and various local bookstores.
Following this, the Region of Crete expanded social support efforts by launching an initiative specifically targeting 500 kindergarten children from large or three-child families within the Rethymno regional unit. In collaboration with the Directorate of Primary Education, the region aims to distribute stationery and supplies to alleviate financial burdens and ensure equal participation in school activities. Vice Regional Governor Maria Lioni noted that these actions are part of ongoing social interventions to strengthen social solidarity.
