School uniform initiatives in Skopje, North Macedonia

Overview

In July 2026, Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgievski announced that starting in September, all first-year secondary school students in the city would receive free uniforms. The initiative was intended to reduce economic disparities and financial burdens on families while fostering a more equal learning environment.

Following this, the Centar Municipality announced its own program for the 2026/2027 school year, extending free uniforms to all students from first to ninth grade across its eight primary schools. Mayor Goran Gerasimovski stated the goal was to prevent bullying and ensure students are judged on merit rather than socioeconomic status. This municipal program includes sets of five cotton items and provides free backpacks to all first-grade students to assist with their transition into the school system.
