Science and urban planning festivals in Turkey
Overview
Turkey has hosted and is preparing for several thematic festivals focused on science, technology, and urban development.
Recent science festivals in Bartın and Hatay showcased domestic technologies. The Bartın University Science Festival attracted approximately 60,000 visitors and featured the Bayraktar TB2 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and a robot named ‘Canik Man’. In Hatay’s Defne district, the ‘Köklerden Göklere’ festival, organized under the TÜBİTAK 4007 program, provided workshops and scientific talks. Hatay Governor Mustafa Masatlı noted the importance of youth becoming technology designers and reported that 257 schools have reopened following the February 6 earthquakes, with 44 more under construction.
In Trabzon, the BilimFest Trabzon science festival, organized by the Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality, recently concluded its three-day program under the motto ‘Minds Growing with Science’. The event set a new attendance record with 223,400 visitors, surpassing the previous year’s 198,500. The festival featured 150 stands, 102 outdoor workshops, and exhibitions from major organizations including TUSAŞ, ROKETSAN, HAVELSAN, TÜBİTAK, TÜRKSAT, and TÜRASAŞ. Notable displays included the HÜRJET aircraft, the HÜRKUŞ mini flight area, and workshops for HAVELSAN’s BAHA autonomous UAV and BARKAN unmanned ground vehicle.
Other regional events include the ‘Kabataş Bilimle Renkleniyor’ festival in Ordu, which featured 30 workshops, and BilimFest in Demirci, Manisa. In Kahramanmaraş, the second Sustainable Science Festival (SÜRBİLFEST) focuses on sustainability and clean energy. Looking ahead, Istanbul is scheduled to host KENTFEST 2026 in December, focusing on urban transformation and smart city technologies.
