Scientific study of kombucha health impacts

Overview

Scientific research is evaluating the health impacts and fermentation processes of kombucha, a fermented tea produced using a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY).

An eight-week randomized controlled trial conducted by researchers at Aberystwyth University involving 40 healthy participants found that daily consumption led to improved levels of certain health-associated compounds, such as polyphenols. However, the study reported no measurable effect on participant stress responses.

Investigations into metabolic health have explored the drink’s influence on blood sugar. While kombucha contains between 3 and 15 grams of sugar per serving, research suggests its organic acids and antioxidants may influence glucose metabolism differently than standard sweetened beverages. Some studies indicate potential for lower post-meal glucose levels and reduced fasting blood glucose in individuals with Type 2 diabetes. Despite these observations, experts note that clinical evidence remains inconsistent due to small participant numbers, and there is currently insufficient evidence to classify kombucha as a proven method for blood sugar control.
