Scotch whisky industry market trends

Overview

The Scotch whisky industry continues to navigate shifting consumer preferences through seasonal initiatives and strategic market expansions. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) recently launched its ‘Whisky Equinox’ to mark the colder season, releasing special 35cl bottlings of an 11-year-old Highland single malt and a 12-year-old Speyside single malt.

Major producers are increasingly prioritizing the ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktail market to offset challenges from financial caution and health-related consumer concerns. Diageo reported selling over 400,000 RTD units at UK festivals this year, while Pernod Ricard noted a 17 per cent increase in RTD sales, describing the category as a ‘recruitment engine’ for bottled spirits. Suntory Global Spirits also views the category as a primary driver for overall spirits growth.

In addition to RTD trends, independent bottler Douglas Laing has introduced its 2026 Winter Editions. These include a Big Peat blended malt from Islay distilleries finished in French ex-red wine casks, and a Scallywag Speyside-based blended malt finished in ex-cognac casks. Meanwhile, the Dalwhinnie Distillery continues to utilize traditional production methods, such as worm tubs for condensation, to maintain the character of its mild and fruity single malt whiskies.

Blended Scotch producers are now seeking to revitalize the declining U.S. market, where sales volumes have dropped among younger consumers. Data from Impact Databank indicates that nine of the top ten brands in the U.S. experienced declines last year, with some seeing double-digit drops in 2025. To combat a loss of cultural relevance, marketers are shifting focus from prestige and reputation toward innovation, terroir, and accessibility, aiming to invite consumers to enjoy the spirit rather than simply admire it.
