Scots College sexual assault charges and court proceedings
Overview
Three students from Sydney’s Scots College, aged 13 and 14, have been charged with the aggravated sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl following an alleged incident in an alleyway in Bondi Junction on July 22. Two of the boys face charges of aggravated sexual assault in the company of others and two counts of aggravated sexual touching, while the third boy faces one count of each offense. All three suspects have been granted conditional police bail and are scheduled to appear in a children’s court on August 25.
During the investigation, police seized electronic devices, replica firearms, a “Glock style” BB gun, laser pointers, and a suspected stolen number plate. The school stated it has co-operated and will continue to co-operate with police regarding the matter.
The charges have brought renewed scrutiny to elite all-male institutions in Australia. Chanel Contos, founder of Teach Us Consent, noted that a 2021 campaign had previously gathered over 500 testimonies alleging sexual assault by students at Scots or Cranbrook schools, raising concerns regarding a culture of “toxic masculinity.”
On August 25, the accused appeared at the Surry Hills Children’s Court. While the identities of the suspects and the victim are legally suppressed due to their ages, Judge Sue Duncombe warned of the repercussions of intense media attention after hearing that some names had been leaked in online comment sections. The teenagers were previously released on bail under strict conditions, including curfews and contact prohibitions.
