Scream film actors address character death mystery
Overview
During a 30th-anniversary reunion panel at the Midsummer Scream convention in Long Beach, California, actors Skeet Ulrich and Matthew Lillard addressed long-standing fan theories concerning the death of the character Tatum Riley in the horror film ‘Scream’.
Ulrich revealed that even screenwriter Kevin Williamson does not officially know which of the two killers was responsible for the slaying, stating, “To be honest, not even [screenwriter] Kevin Williamson knows who killed [Tatum]. And he wrote the damn thing.”
While the film leaves the identity of the killer ambiguous, Lillard suggested his character, Stu Macher, might have been responsible, citing a motive related to the character’s refusal to attend a dance. The actors also noted the production challenges of filming the movie’s final 42-minute sequence, which involved 21 consecutive night shoots.
